AHS Moves on to CD Final

Tuesday, May 18 2010

After leading 5-1 at half, Albemarle moved on by defeating Mountain View 11-4 in the Commonwealth District Tournament. The Patriots held a 42 to 30 advantage in groundballs. And shot 47 times.

Sophomore attacker John Chandler led the Patriots with four goals and Billy Crist had three goals and two assists. It was a somewhat sloppy start for the Patriots’ offense. Albemarle controlled the game’s first three faceoffs, but the attack line had trouble passing the ball.

Turnovers led to Mountain View midfielder Reid Pender scoring the first goal to give the Wildcats (9-7) a 1-0 lead. The Patriots (12-4) settled down and finished the first quarter leading by a goal after senior captain Crist found the back of the net for a pair of goals. Chandler scored three consecutive goals, with assists coming from Crist and Patrick Tubridy, to give the Patriots a 5-1 lead at halftime.

“We were working on moving the ball quicker and trying to get the crisp pass,” Chandler said. “We started off slow, but we got more momentum and I think that’s why we got 11 goals.”

“The defense played particularly well and we played well in the midfield,” McAdams said. “I was pleased overall with the effort, but when you look down the road I think our guys understand we are going to have to do some work and hustle more.”

The Patriots will play Brooke Point on Friday 5/21, at Brooke Piont, for the district trophy.

John Chandler suffered a sprained wrist late in the game and will be out at least several days. Tory Key took a high hit causing a concussion and he will be out of action.

The Patriots will game plan around several injuries and hope to best the Blackhawks for the trophy. Regardless of the outcome, Albemarle will play Osbourne Park in the first round of Regional Tournament play on Monday, 5/24.

The Patriots scored in bunches but didn't get started early, as James Monroe brought the ball down early into the Albemarle defensive end. Jervon Speller finished a feed from Billy Crist about 3 and a half minutes in. Crist then intercepted a clearing pass and finished less then a minute later. After two goals in the first quarter from John Chandler (A), the Patriots found their stride in the second, seeing six different scorers and holding the James Monroe offense to one goal. The team play was outstanding, as Zack DelGrosso (G) and a senior defensive unit of Geoff Quick, Alex Prevost, and Kyle McComsey held the visiting Eagles to a first half shut-out, and only 13 shots during the entire game. In the clearing game the Patriots defensive unit was outstanding.

Quick (D) also added a man-up goal with 2 and 1/2 minutes left in the game. DelGrosso finished the night with 5 saves, and some very timely ones at that, turning everything he faced away.

The Patriots won the ground ball battle 40-29, and matched that number in shots. All tolled, 11 of the 15 goals were assisted. The Patriots kept the Eagles off balance all evening with a tenacious effort in the riding game which resulted in multiple turnovers and second chance opportunities.

Warriors 10, Patriots 2

Friday, April 30 2010

In a stunning outcome the Western Warriors bested the visiting Patriots. In a slow grind which saw the Patriots having to play defense right out of the gate due to technical foul, the Warriors used ball control and timely shooting to build a 5-0 lead at halftime.

The Patriots struggled to build any momentum and had several very untimely turnovers in various situations. No matter what the Patriots seemed to do things were not falling in place. The Warriors experienced little resistance in the clearing game and several shots for Albemarle were just off by inches.

During the game Michael Bernardino (M) left the game with an injured knee. His status is day to day.

7 penalties resulted in the Patriots being man down for 6 and 1/2 minutes. Despite winning the ground ball battle 34-28, Albemarle was not able to get on the board until the 4th quarter - after much of the damage had been done by a very determined Western side. Austin Sigler (G) made 10 saves but continual pressure in the ride and some untimely plays by Albemarle in clearing kept Western in possession and the shots gradually fell one at a time. Billy Crist (A) and Hunter McCann (M) netted goals for the Patriots in the final quarter.

Albemarle coach Pat McAdams’ troops had quite a week, as Wednesday marked the Patriots’ fourth game in seven days, three of those against top-five competition. The legs were a little weary, but Albemarle (6-3, 4-2) just seemed a bit out of sync thanks to a tenacious defensive effort by its opponent. Brooke Point scooped up 16 more ground balls than the Pats, and fired off five more shots.

AHS sophomore attackman John Chandler had a solid performance, cashing in a hat trick of his own, while Billy Crist (game-high three assists), Ryan McCullough and Hunter McCann combined for seven points in the losing effort. Goalie Austin Sigler played well, securing 13 saves.

“We did better than we did last Friday at their place, so I think we made a lot of steps,” McAdams said, referring to the 12-goal loss. “I think we realized that we still have to put together four good quarters of lacrosse in order to do what we want to do this year against a quality opponent.”

Albemarle Loses to Brooke Point 13-1

Friday, April 16 2010

On Friday 4/16 the Patriots visited Brooke Point and were soundly defeated by the Black Hawks 13-1. In what could only be described as a tectonic melt-down by the visiting Patriots, the Black Hawks went on a four quarter blitzkrieg in which everything they did seemed to work and work well.

Ryan Carlisle (M) won 7 of 13 face-offs, but a turn-over prone Albemarle team could not clear the ball (5 for 15 clears) and committed multiple penalties to keep the Patriots from mounting a comeback. Ryan McCollough (A) notched the lone Albemarle goal in the third period unassisted.

The Patriots, who were hindered by an injury to Captain Geoff Quick (D), received an outstanding effort by Zack DelGrosso (G) who played about 3 and 1/2 quarters and recorded 18 saves, many in close and with the body. This effort kept the Black Hawks from registering any more than their 13 tallies.

After ending the first period tied 2-2, Ryan Carlisle (M) secured all six second period face-offs and helped the Patriots to a 6-3 lead at halftime.

Offensively the Pats saw seven different goal scorers, with John Chandler (A) distributing 4 assists. After the visiting Mustangs closed to 6-4 at the end of three quarters the Patriots found their rhythm with 5:46 left in the game after Chandler took a feed from Jervon Speller (M) and put a high heater past MHS keeper Kenny Miller, who finished with 12 saves and looked very solid in goal for the Mustangs throughout the game. Michael Bernardino followed up just overt thirty seconds later with an unassisted, stop and go move to push the lead to 8-4.

Rob Whalen (M) and Reid Bozzone (A) each found the back of the net twice. Geoff Quick added a goal from the defense.

The Patriots' defense provided pressure for most of the game. Two miscues resulted in scores for the Eagles. Ryan McCollough (A) performed well and disrupted the clearing game repeatedly for the Eagles, resulting in several momentum changing goals.

The win helped move the Patriots past a disappointing performance in Monday's scrimmage vs. St. Joseph's Prep.
